NETW202 Week 1 Lab Report
NETW202, Professor Thomas
3-3-2016 iLab #1
Step-by-step instructions for completing this iLab are found within the Skillsoft platform as outlined on the iLab page in the course shell.
Using Windows Applications as Network Tools Lab (17 points )
Write a paragraph (minimum five college-level sentences) below that summarizes what was accomplished in this iLab, what you learned by performing it, how it relates to this weekās TCOs and other course material; and just as important, how you feel it will benefit you in your academic and professional career. (9 points )
This weekās labs have a huge impact on any projects in the IT field; it gives you a strong beginning for the basics of networking. Learning about the Ping, Tracert, give you the ability to troubleshoot or at least verify that the device you are trying to reach is online and available. With Tracert, you not only have the ability to check the devices response but also every hop to the device this helps immensely when you are troubleshooting a connectivity issue.
Learning the IOS and being in the networking field is essential to success and at the very least doing your job. Understanding the different modes that you need to be in and what permissions they grant is also essential to your completing a task or project. Having to learn these modes and commands will help in your future endeavors, there are many router commands but the most important are; user mode, privileged mode, global configuration mode, ROM mode, setup mode. For me the most important modes are the, privileged, user, setup modes, these do the most configuration of the router.
Copy and paste the following screenshots from your Using Windows Applications as Network Tools iLab below.
Task 1, Step 3: Paste a screenshot of the ipconfig command showing your network addressing. (1 point )
After reading the explanation for this command in the Sample Solution, explain why the output of this command is so important to the operation of this particular host within the network. (1 point )
For me the output of this command is extremely important for the verification of the connectivity of the device as it appears to have a multitude of networking applications on it so without the pinging we could not verify that the device was indeed connected to the network.
Task 1, Step 7: Paste a screenshot of the ping command showing a successful ping. (1 point )
After reading the explanation for this command in the Sample Solution, explain what it means if a ping command is successful? (1 point)
The Ping command is important to verify that then packets are reaching their destination and within allotted time.
Task 1, Step 19: Paste a screenshot of the output of the ipconfig /all command. (1 point)
What are some of the additional parameters that are listed here that werenāt displayed in the previous use of the command? (1 point)
With the ipconfig /all command you get the network windows IP configuration, which includes the host name, node type, IP routing enabled as well as the win proxy enabled. The DHCP server is on the /all command.
Task 1, Step 22: Paste a screenshot of the trace route command showing a successful trace to IP address 4.2.2.1. (1 point)
After reading the explanation for this command in the Sample Solution, in your own words, explain what the output of the tracert command indicates. (1 point )
The ā/dā switch in the tracert command is to prevent the computer from using the DNS (Domain Named Server) to look up the route, this way you get the IP address of each router or switch you went thru to get to the server you traced.

Troubleshooting TCP/IP Problems iLab (18 points )
Write a paragraph (minimum five college-level sentences) below that summarizes what was accomplished in this lab, what you learned by performing it, how it relates to this weekās TCOs and other course material; and just as important, how you feel it will benefit you in your academic and professional career. (10 points )
This was a very good first lab to show that using special commands can do various types of work; this work is what the job is all about being able to monitor a network and find issues that can hurt a company. Also in this lab, you get to see what a device does when you use these commands. This also shows you the value of seeing the issues as show up. With the ICMP, I did not see any packet errors so, no red but I do see the value if you were to need to find an error in a hurry this would be the way to do that. Anytime you can use colors to highlight an error in a report it is of great value, and it looks more professional. In the same idea when you manipulate a report to show the errors it is easier for a non-technical person to see those and then identify the magnitude of the issue.
Copy and paste the following screenshots from your Troubleshooting TCP/IP Problems iLab below.
Task 1, Step 1: Paste a screenshot of your successful logon to the Vancouver server as the Vancouver User. (1 point)
Briefly describe the process used to log in to the server. (1 point)
When you have the login prompt up you need to get the password from the screen on the right with the log in information and the input the user name and password then hit log in.
Task 2, Step 2: Generate and view network traffic, Action f. Paste the screenshot of the ping command output of IP address 192.168.0.2. (1 point)
What is significant about receiving a āreplyā from the host you are pinging? (1 point)
Receiving a reply from a host, you are pinging, means that the device is on and connected to the internet.
Task 2, Step 3: Paste a screenshot of the results from your network data capture. (1 point)
At this point in your education, you probably wonāt understand the details of the information that you just captured, but in general, what do you think is pictured in the data capture? (1 point)
To me it looks like an MAC Address table and along with the MAC, it gives you the times and the IP addresses.
Task 3, Step 1: Paste the screenshot of the Microsoft Network Monitor capture summary window showing the
ICMP frames displayed in red. (1 point )
What command do you think caused the generation of the ICMP packets? (1 point)
The ICMP (internet Control Message Protocols) packets are error messages that the router uses to generate messages to show problems in the internet.
