ART101 Week 5 Discussion Evolution of Your Art Interpretation

For this weeks discussion , I have chose the painting Judith with the Head of Holefernes by a Italian artist ll Cavaliere. The art was created in 1603 and the media use oil on canvas . The painting shows the Old Testament heroine Judith here holds the head of Holofernes after beheading him. Holofernes was the leader of the enemy forces that had besieged Judith’s city of Bethulia. Judith had gained entry to Holofernes' camp by pretending to be a traitor. For artists and a religious public, Judith’s deed embodied the virtues of chastity, justice, and the triumph of humility over pride. By the sixteenth century, however, Judith was increasingly associated with less noble heroines, such as Salome. Both were often represented by male artists as the embodiment of feminine erotic tyranny over men.(ll Cavaliere 1603) After reviewing the painting I like how the artist show Judith about to cut the head of Holofernes and how a face is the background to me symbolizing a sole . The painting was very detailed to me on how Judith is looking away while she about to cut his head off. Basically the looking a way is a symbolism of her not wanting the blood to spatter on her .
