BUS308 Assignments Week 1 - Discussion 2

In this lecture, we have covered descriptive statistics, which refer to measures that summarize the characteristics of the group. Prior to going through the lecture, I was conversant with some measures such as mean, which is frequently alongside range. However, the other measures seem to communicate greater degree of information for the same data set. Having said that, then I believe that a single technique cannot be deemed as sufficient enough to completely describe a data set.

A key aspect of the lecture was how the results were interpreted. After coming up with numerical figures, these need to be related to the population characteristics so that they describe entirely the data set. I was able to note the process of coming up with the basic information on the group. Further, I was able to see how relationships between the 5-number summary results for the organization, males, and females begin to inform how data is spread. However, the most interesting part of the lecture was realizing that indeed data could mislead if it is not properly handled. For example, if we only consider the results from the data without considering the nature of the data points, then we may end up with a misled analysis.

Even as I am working towards graduation, it is important that I consider more than just the mean grades am posting. Instead, I will seek to incorporate more measures so as to increase the feedback received from my grades.
