The How Technology Allows Academic Dishonesty to Follow You

Academic dishonesty is an umbrella term that entails the different forms of cheating that that occur during a formal academic exercise. It takes the form of plagiarism, cheating, sabotage, deception, and fabrication (Whitley Jr, 2001). This vice has been well document at various levels of educational learning and the negativity associated with it.

Academic dishonesty is a vice and with it comes consequences when violations are committed. The majority of the repercussions are usually in form of penalties taken by the school administrations on the violators but there also includes academic social ethical and moral concerns. One of the repercussions of violations is the loss of intellectual property. Academic dishonesty such as plagiarism equates to stealing of one’s original work and when this work is used without permission or credit the individual suffers losses in form of possible income recognition or generally intellectual property. Another repercussion of the violation is the incorrect assessment of students. Whenever students get involved in academic dishonesty the instructors find it hard to assess their performance to evaluate their understanding, applications, and mastery of the content.

Academic dishonesty can affect one’s professional career in many ways. The most obvious way is the practical concerns which tend to have grave consequences in their line of work. (Colnerud, 2009) explains that some work lines such as medical, law, and engineering if obtained through academic dishonesty may lead to jeopardy in terms of the welfare and public safety resulting from the incompetence of the graduate. This could also lead to an alumni problem as the employer may not tend to employ future graduates from such a school. The other way in which academic dishonesty can affect one’s professional career is the legal consequences which come in terms of fines, losses, and lawsuits that ruin the institution’s reputation as well as damaging the prospect of the students’ future careers. This is mainly on sponsored projects by external sponsors.

Preventing academic dishonesty is simple and it begins by doing the basics. These basics include avoiding situations that may lead one to that path. For instance, one should not wait till the deadline to do their assignments. Such a kind of rush leads to plagiarism and cheating which can be avoided by having good time management. When done properly this can prevent academic dishonesty, thus preventing negative effects on one’s academic journey and professional career.Ā  Other ways include not sharing assignments with other students and if they have difficulties try to help in other ways but not copying. Asking for assignment deadline extension can be helpful too while also keeping track of the sources used and learning how to cite properly. When such basics have been adhered too one will be able to prevent academic dishonesty, thus preventing negative effects on one’s academic journey and professional career (Hodgkinson, 2016).

Academic dishonesty is a vice and with it comes consequences when violations are committed. The consequences of such a vice are catastrophic with implications spanning to one’s professional career. Proper efforts and steps should be taken to curb such a vice to ensure that the negative effects on one’s academic journey and professional career are prevented.
