ECO610 Discussion 1 Week 2 Outsourcing
The term “labor-intensive firms” describes industries that rely heavily on human labor, such as clothing and shoe manufacturing. In labor-intensive industries, labor costs are much higher than capital costs, as struggle makes up a much larger share of total production costs. When comparing these two sectors across countries, it is important to note that there are regional variations (Rahman, 2022). Finding workers is challenging in the United States but easy in Southeast Asia, while capital-intensive businesses are scarce in both regions.
The price tag also considers the time and energy expended in producing the product, which is significant relative to the required capital investment. Since labor costs are viewed as a determinant of competitive advantage, this sector stands to gain during market downturns.
In contrast, production at capital-intensive businesses depends heavily on financial resources rather than human labor. The value of their fixed assets and depreciation is also quite high. It is more challenging for a capital-intensive business to get off the ground once the initial investments have been made because these companies may benefit from economies of scale with expenses but also have trouble keeping other businesses from competing with them. Companies that rely heavily on capital investments would benefit greatly from increased connectivity among their suppliers, leading to lower prices and better service for their clientele (Rahman, 2022). A supplier’s ability to negotiate price and terms of service is directly proportional to the scope of their business.
