Professional Statement
Our group was assigned the topic Digital Citizenship. As a group, we discussed the various digital platforms we were familiar with in the context of education, as well as the issues we see regarding each platform. Our target audience will be parents and the idea is to educate them on the platforms their children use. We found importance in educating parents, as this was something we noticed parents struggling with throughout the COVID-19. As our conversations evolved and we spoke about our own experiences, we realized that rather than targeting the massive scope of school-wide digital resources, we would focus on the uses of a common K-12 digital tool; Google Classroom.
This tool was utilized throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued use in the classroom, as we have each seen in our own experiences. An outside source found on the ERIC Platform highlighted the ease and effectiveness of Google Classroom brought to online learning from a teacher’s perspective. This study found that the features of Google Classroom were easily utilized and thus preferred by teachers (Santos, 2021). As Google Classroom becomes a more widely used tool, we feel it is important for parents to have a strong understanding of this platform.
Utilizing Waldenās Library, we found that research supports that Google Classroom is an effective platform for measuring student understanding (Prastiawan, Maulina, Tryanasari, Imaningrum, Pratiwi & Sumarsono, 2020). This information will be useful in explaining to parents the importance of this platform as well as demonstrate how to access students' progress and other important tools. Additionally, a study on the effectiveness of digital teaching materials states āA digitally literate person can not only process information but also can create, collaborate, communicate, and work by ethical rules, and understand when and how technology must be used to be effective to achieve goals. Digital literacy skills are very important for students… Google classroom-based learning can be a learning innovation today, especially in this pandemic. In Google classroom-based learning, lecturers and students will be connected digitally.ā (Fahrurrozi, Hasanah, Dewi, & Ratnaningsih, 2020, para. 3). This provides us with additional research that we can use to express the importance of Google Classroom and its uses within the classroom space and at home. The RWRCOEL Technology Proficiencies (2015) states ācandidate advocates and practices safe, legal, and responsible use of technology and digital-age communication toolsā. This is also supported by Fahrurrozi, Hasanah, Dewi, and Ratnaningsihās (2020) research in that, our group is advocating for students and families to practice digital literacy and thus safe, legal, and responsible use of technology by utilizing Google Classroom. We look forward to working together to build a project that parents can easily understand, with scholarly research to back up our provided information.
