ļ· Do you view Haney as a professional? Support your response with specific references to your own view of professionalism and the Learning Resources.
I view her as a very dedicated and caring professional. It is obvious that she takes time to interact with her students in ways that exceed the normal classroom. She also takes the time out to get to know the studentās families and surrounding communities. We know that communities and families play a huge role in a childās success. As stated in diversity proficiencies, āunderstanding the learner includes the students prior learning, culture, family and communityā (Laureate Education, 2016). As I talked about my own view on professionalism I related back to when my sister and I were in school with an unfit mother. I felt like this was a connection with Haney as she was told that she was not ācollege materialā (Haney, 2014 pg. 109). My sister ended up failing the third grade when all of this occurred, and I felt like I failed her. I love that even though they thought that way about Haney she never gave up!! Same with my sister and I, both now in our masterās programs even after going through a hard life. It is true when they say that you cannot let your past define you. I believe that Haney is a role model to many teachers, and we should all aspire to be that type of professional.
ļ· Do you think Haney exemplified effective teaching practices? Why or why not?
I think Haney exemplifies effective teaching practices in many ways. For starters she builds lasting relationships by getting to know her students and families like I stated in question one. I keep going back to this because it truly is so important. For example, during this trying time us teachers must make sure we keep up our lasting relationships with our students without even seeing them! That has already been a struggle for me, but I know how important it is. I believe I am doing this by making personal calls and reaching out to the families. I wish that I could do some of the cool and engaging things she did during this time since we cannot be in the classroom. She did things like organize camps and plan field trips. During the camps she even helped our students besides her own by giving them the opportunity to volunteer and receive a certificate. She truly was helping so many people in different ways by creating this camp. This also relates to the five core propositions because proposition one states that, āteachers are committed to students and their learningā (National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, 2012). Haney was committed day in and day out and even throughout what would have been the āsummer monthsā and that exemplifies effective teaching practices.
ļ· How might you argue that Haney was creating positive social change?
I believe she created social change throughout her career. In the reading she shared a very moving story where her and some colleagues were held at gun point during a robbery. She assumed that the men robbing the store either recognized them or thought they were teachers since they were making copies for school. This really gave me a different outlook on my students because it all goes back to how we want to view our students. It is so important to not judge your students before getting to know them. Even after all of this she still used that situation to inspire her in the classroom and out. That is when her and her sister came together to build a summer camp that would inspire students to work hard and succeed in life (Haney, 2014, pg. 108). That camp helped students recognize that they are important and to work hard and not give up just like she did! I think that is a way she created a positive social change and inspired the children of the future.
ļ· What is at least one question would you want to ask Haney? Provide an explanation (i.e., rationale) for your particular question.
I would ask Haney how she remained so motivation and positive? I say this because I am just a firstyear teacher and there are hard days. I know that is for everyone, but she seemed to be so dedicated! I also am curious as to how her school felt about all the extra things she did. I would think they approved, but how did it make other teachers feel? Did they feel like they should do more? Did all the students want to be in Haneyās class? She truly seemed like a very inspirational teacher!!
