Module 3 Week 4 Discussion

According to Mandirach & Gummer (2016), collaboration emphasizes the need for shared ideas, common terms, examination of data, and discussion of outcomes among colleagues so that educators can learn from one another. I am using collaboration to not only plan my course of instruction for my action research project, but also as I interpret and analyze my data. Over the course of my lessons, I will use the following pre-approved data tools: deidentified documents, critical friend groups, and field notes. Field notes can be used to observe and document students within the classroom setting as part of continuous document collection (Walden University, 2015a). As I meet with my colleagues, I will bring my deidentified documents for discussion with my critical friend group. It is my expectation that by collaborating with my peers I will be able to efficiently analyze data results and begin to draw a conclusion based on my research.

According to Mertler, it is beneficial to design a research study timeline to stay organized and on task (Mertler, 2020). My research study timeline is listed below:

Day 1 – Introduce students to two passages of similar Lexile levels: one for fluency (form 3-1) and one for comprehension (The Great Bake Off). Initial data will be recorded.

Day 5 – Teacher will use the same two passages that have been used throughout the week to collect updated data on student progress.

Day 8 – Introduce students to two new passages of similar Lexile’s; Form 3-2 will be used for data collection on fluency and Adventure Club will be used to assess comprehension.

Day 12 – Teacher will use the two passages introduced on day 8, which will have been used in daily lessons to reassess fluency and comprehension for updated data.

Day 15 – Teacher will introduce final two passages for data collection, Passage Form 3-3 will be used for fluency and The Cat will be used for comprehension data.

Day 19 – Teacher will use final two passages to reassess student fluency and comprehension. Teacher will then chart all data and begin analyzing and determining if conclusion is aligned with hypothesis.

When conducting action research, it is important to remember our code of ethics. First, when completing research involving students, we must obtain parental/guardian consent to do so. I have already addressed this concern with parents and have received completed consent forms for all students. I have also informed my students that we will be completing this study and they are eager to participate. I have also assigned each of my students a letter (A-W). as to ensure that no students information is potentially shared.

To collect data for my action research project, I will be using deidentified documents in the form of guided passages with marks, as well as field notes taken during the week pertaining to observations on student fluency and comprehension.

Final Response to Module 3 Discussion

After reviewing the responses from my peers, I have chosen to incorporate a checklist of items that I must observe into my field notes. For example, were there any distractions as the students were reading for fluency with me or answering comprehension questions in the group. I will continue to use deidentified documents with alphabetical letters representing students to protect student identity. It is important that student identity remain anonymous to respect their privacy, which was my primary ethical issue. This is the reason I chose to identify students by a single letter rather than name or initial. I would suggest to my course colleagues that they have a schedule with collaborators and make every effort to maintain this schedule. Following a schedule will help to ensure that meetings are on topic, thus increasing the relevance.
