EXP105_G30 Discussions Week 3 - Discussion 2- Steps to Metacognition

I identify with the “connecting” portion of the meta cognitive process the most because it helps me process assignments more efficiently and also gives me a sense of comfort and confidence. When I reminisce on similar assignments I feel more comfortable going forward with the assignment that I have been given.

For me, mulling is the most difficult step because I am brain storming and trying to figure out which step is the most advantageous for me in regards to the assignment that I have been given.

To be quite honest, I usually don’t skip any steps because I have anxiety and I am extremely hard on myself. When I don’t do well on an assignment I become frustrated for days on end so I try my best to cover every step in order to insure success.

I view myself as a learner who relies heavily on “sequence” learning patterns. I read instructions carefully and list out everything that is being asked of me (either on paper or in my mind). Then I gather information (literature, information from the internet, tools given to me by the instructor) and brainstorm what is being asked of me and try to strategically figure out the best way to successfully complete the assignment. Afterwards, I go forward with the assignment. Before doing all of this I make a point to set aside an ample amount of time to produce quality work so that I am not rushing, procrastinating or presenting my instructor with a run-of-the mill, lackluster assignment.

I would like to use more confluent learning patterns in order to become a learner that can tackle spontaneous assignments and assignments that I have never been presented with before with glee. In order to become that type of learner I must do three things: Adopt a positive mindset towards unfamiliar projects, be open to things outside of my comfort zone and critically analyze my assignments.
