GEN103 Week 1 - Discussion 1-Information Literacy and You
The definition of information literacy is the ability to use and evaluate information to see if its real or fake. Practically a life skill that is very important to acquire. It is important to understand it while Iām researching, I can recognize that information is relevant and that the sources are reliable. Information literacy is also knowing how to evaluate information credibility. Three examples of concepts or skills from Module 1 of our textbook will be Critical thinking in conjunction with creative thinking, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking. Critical thinking as stated in the textbook, āWith the amount of information we are exposed to on a daily basis, we need strong reasoning skills to determine fact from fiction. This is where critical thinking comes in. Critical thinkers are skeptical and do not simply accept all the arguments and conclusions they encounter. Instead, they question these arguments and conclusions, daily lives, that it is important we learn how to know the difference from facts and fiction as the textbook states. Creative thinking also plays an important role, even though, creative thinking may look as critical thinking, creative thinking is more about thinking outside the box. Not setting your mind to what information was giving, but to consider many possible answers. (Winckelmann, 2015). Problem-solving is when we are able to work through issues or find a solution to a problem. āIndividuals who are information literate are able to successfully apply information to solve problems.ā(Winckelmann, 2015). Last but not least, Higher-Order thinking. This is a skill that we will be using more in our academic and professional lives as stated in the textbook āInformation literate individuals will move throughout each of the levels depending on their need and purpose for information.ā (Winkelmann,2015) During class I want to learn more about information literacy and how it can help me in my daily life, at work, and school. Also, another one that will be great to learn about is creative thinking because we all think differently in our own ways.
