GEN499 Discussions 2 Week 2 Ethics and Moral Development

To be ethical is to adhere to the moral standards that are accepted in the society.Ā  When applied to a professional environment, being ethical is of a higher standard than just avoiding to do what is believed to be illegal. Regarding personal growth, ethical decisions are vital in making choices. Conformation to ethical standards is also significant in academic growth. For example, when carrying out research being ethical implies that a student has to cite all the sources of information used in writing down a dissertation( Kohlberg, 1975)

Ā I once faced an ethical dilemma while I was 10 years old.Ā  I was once very bankrupt and I needed money to buy a drink for myself in the shop.Ā  I did not have any money but my mother had left some of her money on the table. I had a choice of stealing the money or taking it to my mother and tell her to help me with some that I could use to buy a drink. I decide to take it to my mother and asked for some which she opted to help me.

My general education courses have had a positive impact on my ethical values. This is because through general education courses, I have been able to understand the impact of ethical values on life. Ethical values help in promoting morality in the society. They do this by influencing the beliefs of an individual about several things. In addition, general education courses helped me to think ethically in every decision that I make. This has helpedĀ  in improving my morality.
