HEP 452 Module 5.2 Discussion Inside Out Approach

Ron Finley has used an inside-out approach to identify the cause of major diseases such as diabetes and obesity in his community. He has identified food as the major problem as well as the solution to the current challenge. As a result, Ron decided to start small gardens where he could grow food crops, giving his family as well as his neighbors access to food materials. Through encouraging people to grow their own food, Ron has helped his community get access to healthy foods as families now have access to balanced diets. In trying to push for his creativity, he has encouraged many people in his community to develop a culture that is embodied in food production, thus addressing the health issues that are present in his community. For example, he states that he was frustrated with the increased number of dialysis centers mushrooming in his city as well as the number of wheelchairs that were being disposed to the community. Based on this, he took it as a challenge to change the health behavior not only of his family but the entire community by establishing gardens where people can grow food crops. Currently, he encourages those who wish to have a conversation with him to do so in the garden and not in an office. The shovel is his best tool of choice.
