Each philosophies of W. Edwards Deming, Joseph Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby had their differences and reasoning. Crosby’s seems to be what the PMI is focused towards now but each person could be better used in certain environments. Knowing each philosophies can be beneficial to use in different environments when needed.

Deming’s definition was the result of work efforts divided by the total costs. He thought that if you could divide the work effort over how much it will cost you can get an idea of how the quality will be. Also if the total cost is more than the work effort it can be determined the quality will not be worth the effort.

Juran’s Definition of quality is to meet the customer’s needs. This is pretty spot on when it comes to quality. The measure of quality is down to the customer’s approval and rating. It is always good to make sure that you exceed their expectations but in the end the customer knows what they want and if they are satisfied with it then the quality is going to be great.

Crosby’s Definition of conformance to requirements can relate in a way to Juran’s definition. Technically the requirements are going to be what the customer puts on you which would be the customer’s needs. The requirements should always be followed to ensure that you are creating a superior product for the customer. If certain things can be added or done differently to increase or surpass the quality requirements than those steps should be taken as long as they are within the budget and timeline.

Each philosophies of the 3 can be used in conjunction or differentiated between the three. For instance Deming’s definition doesn’t focus on the customer’s needs it focuses more on how much the project can cost that will improve or diminish quality. The other two focus more towards quality of the customer’s needs and requirements. Even though Juran’s and Crosby’s definitions are very similar they can be differentiated by that Juran’s definition is to focus on the customer needs which would normally mean you follow only what the customer requires from the project. Crosby’s is to follow the requirements of the project that could be set by the customer or by the company.

The three can be used in conjunction by taking in consideration what the customer requires and the cost of doing so to improve the quality. If the customer gives you a list of requirements you can see if it will be feasible in the projects budget to meet their level of quality and give a quality agreement to the customer based on such.

All in all the three philosophies of W. Edwards Deming, Joseph Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby made some breakthroughs in management and quality control. They had different definitions but the same goal to improve the quality of the project and make sure the budget stays reasonable. They also talk about different ways to manage the workers and keep top management in a role that doesn’t interfere with the quality of the workers craftsmanship.

For instance Crosby talks of high level involvement which means the top management only deals with anything that is classified as high level and doesn’t deal with the minor things until they become major things. This is a great practice to restrict from the workers being interrupted by upper management for tedious instances. This gives the workers the opportunities to take pride in their work and responsibility for their work to deliver a high quality product or end work.
