STEM Talking Points
Computer literacy to me means having the most basic general knowledge about how a computer, whether itās a PC, Laptop or Desktop work. With the general knowledge that includes what components are included and also how they function. It doesnāt have to be into specifics but at a minimum the basics. For example, a computer literate person should know what Random Access Memory is, and what it does, such as it helps increase the processing speed of the computer. Knowing the basics and how they come together will give the user the necessary knowledge to be proficient.

It is very important to be computer literate because in todayās world because everything is moving towards technology and computers play a big part of that evolution. Another reason for being computer literate besides evolution is the harm that can be caused if you are oblivious to SPAM, and other malicious links and sites. By being computer literate, you can avoid a lot of harm such as identity theft, computer being hacked/compromised and a lot more.

In todayās world everything revolves around technology and has become a very big part of our society. Over the yearās technology has evolved immensely, years back before I was born cell phones werenāt a thing and people only had land lines to communicate. Over time new technology became about and then the cell phone came into play. The cell phone allowed us to communicate virtually anywhere in the world. Cell phones over the years has evolved has have become a lot smaller and a lot more powerful, in some instances cell phones can essentially do almost the same thing a computer can do. Another example is how we went from floppy disk to USB flash drives. Floppy disks were big and bulky and were limited in the amount of storage it could handle. After years of evolvement, now we have smaller USB drives that are capable of storing up to 128GB of data. Education has also evolved and adapted with the current lifestyle. Schooling has become more efficient for the working adults, by providing online classes so one does not have to go into a physical class to get a degree.

4. What are some ways in which I might use technology in my career?
Technology isnāt going anywhere anytime soon! Technology is being used in almost every company, for example Microsoft office and all the tools it has to offer such as word, excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and outlook the main key software that are currently being used in todayās society. I know where I work at use are constantly using outlook for mean of communication, PowerPoint for presentations, word for memorandums, and excel for spreadsheet to track equipment. Iām currently pursuing a career in networking, and the technology in routers, switches and firewalls has evolved over time. We are a point where we can utilize 100GB speed on core switches, which was unheard of in the early 2000ās. Skype is another big game changer in the technology field I know the military such as the army has begun using Skype business for their IM capabilities to communicate back and forth.
