MGT330 Discussion 2 Week 3 Bias in Performance Appraisal
According to the video, the unconscious mind is responsible for most of the quick decisions that we make especially without engaging rational thinking. Often, these decisions are wrong given that they are not subjected to rational analysis. As such, the way an organization can lower the impact of appraisal bias is through understanding what subconscious bias is. Secondly, ensuring that the decision making process is slow, rational and founded on the understanding of critical thinking. This makes it possible to give room for technical issues to be analyzed before a decision is made. In appraisals, the analyzing of intricate issues that may have led to a certain behavior helps the employees to judge their colleagues objectively. Spreading awareness among the employees and teaching them the importance of critical thinking paves way for them to lower the rate of subjective judgment.Ā
As well, ensuring that companies teach their employees the importance of independent decision making when considering the performance of others is critical (Thompson, 2018). While the knowledge alone is not enough, ensuring that they have skills to engage the conscious mind in decision making makes it possible for them to attain the set goals.
