Introduction

Discuss what you will do in this lab. Provide some background information on the main idea in this lab and discuss the purpose of the lab activity.

In the Configure and verify initial switch configuration lab, I will be learning how to configure a switch, then I will configure the remote access to the switches, then I will learn how to verify the statues of the switch. The final thing I will do is that I will configure the switch interfaces. The purpose of this lab is to learn how to configure a switch and how to verify everything is working as it should.

Procedure

How did you go about implementing the lab activity? Describe the steps you took to ensure that the final implementation meets the original business goal. For example, did you design a new IP scheme and assign IP addresses to devices based on a given range of IP addresses? Did you assign IP addresses manually, dynamically, or both? Did you name devices based on location? Did you or would you connect switches first or routers first, why? Did you configure the end devices or the infrastructure devices first? What was the plan to verify that the network work?

Note that the procedure must take into consideration not only the steps you took to implement the lab solution but also the order in which you carried out those steps and a rationale for doing so.

The first thing I did in the lab was that I set the hostname to NYACCESS1, then I enabled a password for the privilege mode and then I enabled secret for the configuration terminal. Then I moved on to viewing, making, and erasing the startup configuration on the NYACCESS1. I then proceed to configure the VLAN 1 by adding the 192.168.16.7 IP Address to the VLAN 1. Then I had to configure a password for the virtual terminal lines or VTY lines then I accessed Putty on the PLABCSCO01 so I can remotely connect to the NYACCESS1 switch. The next few procedures were to configure a domain name and create a password for the domain. I then enabled SSH and Telnet as an accepted transport on the

VTY lines so the PLABCSCO01 can connect to NYACCESS1 through both of those methods. The next thing I did was that I pinged from the NYACCESS1 to the PLABCSCO01 by using the ping 192.168.16.10 command and it came back successful. Then I used the traceroute 192.168.16.10 and that showed me the route the packets take to get from the switch to PLABCSCO01. The final few steps are to add a description to help identify what is connected to the interface by entering the global configuration mode on the switch and using the command ā€œinterface fast Ethernet 0/1ā€ and then ā€œdescription plabcsco01 serverā€. This will show that PLABCSCO01 is connected to the switch and I know to what port it is connected to. Then I configured the speed and the duplex of the interface through FastEthernet0/2. I will set the interface to 100Mbps Full duplex and that is the end of the lab.

Results

Discuss your findings here. You devise some steps to complete the lab. Did the lab work? Did you make adjustments to your original procedure? How can you tell that the lab activity implemented meets the business needs?

The lab did work like it was intended to and there were no problems that I had to solve. Mostly it was to configure the switch and configure the remote settings to be able to connect through the PLABCSCO01 to the switch NYACCESS1. In the end I used the command line interface to configure some settings on the switch to be able to mostly set it up, all while switching through different modes like user exec mode, global configuration mode, privileged mode and interface configuration mode as well. I also assigned an IP Address to VLAN1 to be able to connect to the switch remotely. I switched the remote access from telnet to SSH but in the end I just enabled both telnet and SSH for lab purposes. The final thing I did was that I used ping, traceroute, telnet, and SSH to see if the switch was working correctly. This lab would implement to business needs because as a Network System Administrator I want to be quick and efficient, this lab helped me learn how to remote into a switch so I wouldn’t have to go to the switch itself causing me to waste company time.

Application and Analysis

Below are some sample questions that will guide you as you complete this lab section.

From the information given, can you develop a set of instructions to implement the solution in a small-to medium-sized network?

From the instructions given in the lab I would say that it has enough information to create a set of instructions for a small to medium-sized network. The instructions were simple enough for me to understand and retain the knowledge so that I would be able to create a set of instructions.

What, if anything, would you change before applying the lab activity in a production (live) network?

I would leave the VTY lines to just SSH because in the lab I left the VTY lines to both Telnet and SSH, but Telnet isn’t as safe as SSH because Telnet transmits its data in clear text. That’s the only thing I would change as of now.

What vertical market (Financial, Manufacturing, Education, Healthcare, Telecommunications, etc.) does this lab activity align with the most? Why?

This lab aligns with all those vertical markets because almost every company uses a switch in their company. This lab was very broad and there isn’t really a specific market for it.

How was this lab activity like other labs that you have done in the past? Back when I was in ITT Tech I did a lab just like this but that was a while ago and this lab refreshed my memory a bit because of all the terms and how to use the command line interface but everything was similar to the lab I did before.

Can you distinguish between concepts and application? A concept is an idea or even a plan, but an application is the actual action or implementation of the plan.

Questions

1. What new concepts or theories have you learned about after completing this lab activity?

After completing this lab, I learned the concept of setting up a switch and the different modes available on the switch. I also learned about the Telnet and the SSH and about the VTY lines as well. These are all new concepts that I learned from this lab.

2. In this class, we use the three steps approach to complete the lab activity. The steps include plan, implement, and verify. Discuss and explain how you execute each step in this lab activity.

The first step was to plan the lab instructions and to read about what I was going to be doing in the lab which was to set up the switch and the remote access to the switch. Then I started to implement this little by little throughout the lab until I reached the end of the lab and everything was configured the way it should have. Then I had to verify that the lab was done correctly so I checked the final configuration from the NYACCESS1 and matched it to the one from the instructions and they both matched.

3. What challenges, if any, have you encountered in this lab? How have you addressed those challenges? If you have not experienced any challenge, tell us what new troubleshooting commands you have learned this week and how that command has helped you complete the lab activity.

I didn’t really experience any challenges with this lab but I learned about the ping and the traceroute command to see if the PLABCSO01 was connected to the switch and then I used the traceroute to see all the connections that it took to get from NYACCESS1 to PLABCSCO01.

4. How would you apply what you have learned this week in future courses or in the IS/IT field?

This lab has taught me how to set up remote access to a switch, so I won’t have to run around to the switch and back to the computer which makes my job a little easier as well. I will apply this in the IT field most definitely because it can save a lot of time and effort and its good knowledge to have as well.

Conclusion and Recommendation

In the conclusion, you need to address what you intended to do and correlate that with what you actually did. Did the two differ in any way? Please explain any difference between expectation and observation.

When I first started the lab, I intended to learn how to set up a switch and how to make the switch have access to remote connectivity. Once I started to get into the lab, I noticed I did everything I intended to do but I did a lot more as well. I went through different modes in the command line on the switch and I also learn how to change the VTY lines from Telnet to SSH or keep them both. Then I learned how to ping and traceroute the PLABCSCO01.

What would you suggest that we do differently to improve the lab experience? If you do not have any suggestions for this week, then what do you wish we add or remove from this week’s lab to enhance your overall learning experience?

I wish we could have connected more devices to the switch so I can learn how to connect multiple devices and to see all those devices on the switch.

How did the lab activity align with today’s technology? Every business uses a switch and even people at home have switches so that means that switches are very accessible. This lab has taught me how to configure and verify if everything is working correctly on the switch.

Lessons Learned

This is the take-away message. What have you learned from this lab activity? Assume this question comes from your grandma, what would you tell her? She does not need to have a technical background to understand what you did. In brief, make it plain and simple.

I learned how to configure a switch by using different user modes to connect one computer to the switch. I enabled the remote settings so that connection was possible from the computer to the switch and then I just tested the connection with the ping command and the traceroute command.
