Multitasking and Technology
Multitasking and Technology

Prewriting
What is your narrowed topic? Be detailed in your answer. You can use any of the versions you’ve developed for prior assignments.
Multitasking and Technology
Who is your primary audience or reader? Why? Be detailed in your answer about your audience.
I believe my primary audience is high school and college students. The reason why I say this is because I think these students use multiple devices at the same time more than anyone.
In a sentence or short paragraph, what is your thesis statement, including your angle? Write what will appear in your essay. I chose this topic to write about because I learned about multitasking in psychology first semester when I started here at Devry last year. We talked about how we are constantly on our cell phones during class, and how it’s not only rude, but it does in fact take away from our learning ability/ ability to concentrate. Schools should offer their students ways they can use their electronic devices in the classroom.
What topic sentences will you use as the foundation of your communication? (If necessary, add more points.)
• “According to Bahar Baran the main purpose of this article is to examine the effect of multitasking on academic works.”
• This article discusses the effect multitasking has on the brain.
• Lord Chesterfield said, “There is time enough for everything in the course of the day, if you do but one thing at one, but there is not time enough in the year, if you will do two things at a time.”
• I believe this article is about the multiple high-priority projects and the many small that constantly come up in one’s day-to-day work activities.
What method of organization and development will you use to develop your paragraphs?
• Introduction:
• I believe important fact about multitasking and technology is when you need to pay attention an area toward the front of the brain called the prefrontal cortex springs to action. I think this helps you focus your attention on a goal and coordinates messages with other brain systems to carry out the task. What are some of the problems with too much technology and multi tasking? The bad effects of multitasking take their toll by not allowing you to recover from excessive stimulation that bombards you on a daily basis.
• Body:
o “According to Bahar Bahan the main purpose of this article is to examine of multitasking on academic works.” Mr. Baran said, four different multitask are using the internet, talking with the phone, watching television and listening to music. He said finally the study indicated that using the internet, talking on the phone and watching television while doing academic work had a detrimental effect on academic works.
o This article discusses the effect multitasking has on the brain. “According to Etienne Koechlin said, that when there are two concurrent goals the brain divides in half.” Mr. Koechlin also said, we might be in trouble when we try to juggle more than two tasks, because we have only two frontal lobes. Mr. Koechlin says mastering a single activity to the point it becomes automatic is unlikely to make you better at multitasking in general.
o Lord Chesterfield sais, “There is time enough for everything in the course of the day, if you do but one thing at one, but there is not time enough in the year, if you will do two things at a time.” For an example: Most states have now made that particular form of multitasking illegal. “According to Rene Marois said, that taskswitching leads to time lost as the brain determines which task to perform.” Therefore for what I see from reading this article is that the younger generation may need some type of electronic device to help them pay attention to their schoolwork more often.
o I believe this article is about the multiple high-priority projects and the many small tasks that constantly come up in one’s day-to-day work activities. Therefore I think one advantage to using electronic files over handwritten logbooks is that the electronic version is searchable by words or parts of a word. I think I will share this article with people who need help with multitasking.
• Conclusion:
o I think that this is a topic that should be taught about in school and outside of school. English in the 21st Century is all about spreading a message through technology and using it to our full advantage. As of right now, we are giving people the tools they need and not teaching them how to use them properly. We give kids cell phones but don’t teach them when it’s appropriate to use them. This is proving to be a dangerous road for many reasons.
First Draft Topic Goes Here
Start with the attention-grabbing story: Capture your listeners’ attention right away with a detailed story, an anecdote about the problem. You will explain that if this happened, there must be a problem that should be solved.
Identify the topic: This idea lets your readers know what your proposal is about in general terms. Express the purpose: this idea allows readers to understand the purpose of your proposal.
Emphasize why the topic is important: Few readers will care about a topic unless you make them care. Briefly identify effects and indirect effects that you will develop in the second section. End with your thesis statement. Be clear and concise about your solution and why it will succeed; start with your solution and then identify reasons for why it will work.
Problem Analysis: This section details the history, causes, and effects of the problem. Offer background information: Historical or background information will put your topic into a broader context. You will detail how and when the problem began and continued to be a problem.
Detail causes of the problem: You will identify, explain, and support with research the causes of the problem.
Explain effects of the problem: The negative effects of the problem, including indirect effects, will be explained using research.
Be sure to include a visual, with a title, caption, and source information. See the Week 5 Lecture for more information. Place the visual closest to where you will explain it further or connect it to an idea.
Thus Section I: Introduction and Section II: Problem Analysis are detailed in this first draft. See the Week 5 Lecture for more detailed information on each of the sections above. The length of this document is about three pages—or five pages if you’re counting the title page and References page. See References below. You should have at least three sources for your References list. Proofread carefully and then turn in this document to the Dropbox by the end of
Week 5 as your last name first Final Draft Proposal.docx. Good luck!
