Module 2 Discussion: Support Groups
As part of our assignment to attend a support group, I chose to visit an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting at the William Way LGBTQIA+ Center in Philadelphia, PA. The reason I selected this specific meeting is that alcohol has a pervasive presence in many LGBTQIA+ community members' lives. In many instances, the safe spaces for the community are queer bars, where alcohol is often a significant aspect of social interaction. These spaces are not only venues for meeting new people but also places where individuals can feel wanted and cared about, which can lead to an unhealthy association between social comfort and alcohol consumption.
During the meeting, the primary focus was on alcoholism and how it had affected the lives of the attendees. However, there was also some discussion about the use of party drugs, such as crystal meth and cocaine, particularly in how alcohol dependence had led to a reliance on these substances for some individuals. The conversations revealed that many attendees used substances to feel numb or to navigate social situations that made them uncomfortable or anxious.
My experience at the meeting was largely what I expected in terms of structure, with individuals sharing their experiences with alcoholism, including their struggles, slip-ups, and achievements since their last meeting. The meeting concluded with the distribution of two 30-day sober medallions and one year-sober medallion, recognizing the progress of those who had maintained sobriety. This moment was particularly poignant, as it underscored the possibility of achieving sobriety for those who are committed to the process, and it allowed those individuals to share their stories and offer hope to others.
Several attendees shared how alcoholism had severely impacted their lives, including issues with attendance at work, physical health problems from frequent drinking, and strained relationships with friends and family. Many described feeling unsupported by their biological families, particularly because their families did not accept their queer identities. As a result, these individuals turned to AA and their broader community for the support they lacked elsewhere. Once they made the decision to attend AA, there appeared to be a strong motivation among them to work toward sobriety and improve their lives.
Overall, this was an extremely positive and enlightening experience. It provided me with deeper insight into the challenges that members of the LGBTQIA+ community face, especially how alcohol is intertwined with their social spaces and can cause more harm than good. The meeting highlighted the importance of having supportive spaces like AA, where individuals can seek help and work toward recovery in a non-judgmental environment. I hope others in the class found their experiences with support groups to be as impactful as I did.
